Marine Engines vs Automotive Engines
Marine engines are exposed to extreme working conditions and a tough environment. Some noteworthy differences between marine engine and an automotive engine and the peripheral accessories parts. Engine blocks are heavy duty and fitted with brass frost plugs. Heads and cams are set up for a completely different torque curve because a marine engine must develop most of its torque on the low end of throttle range and maintain a continuous RPM working much harder than an automotive engine.
Accessories parts differences include the electrical systems, the exhaust systems, the cooling systems, and the fuel systems. Automotive parts are not designed to be put in closed areas where gas fumes could explode from a spark. Marine electrical parts in a boat are either completely sealed or specially vented to prevent such a disaster. This includes the starter, alternator, distributor, and many other electrical components. Marine cooling system parts must have special ceramic seals, stainless steel backing plate, and a bronze impeller to resist corrosion. Marine fuel system parts are specially designed to keep fuel from being drawn or ejected in extreme conditions. Carburetor flood dams and dual diaphragm fuel pump with fail safe bleed off line to carburetor. These are some highlights to the differences between Automotive and Marine Engines & the peripheral accessories parts.
